Welcome to Venice Arts' Art Mentoring Program

If you are between the ages of 10 and 18, you can take one of our photography, digital arts, or film classes, all of which use the latest technology. If you are between the ages of 6 and 9 you can participate in our Art Discovery classes, and explore your creativity. Classes are free of charge to low-income families.

Session Dates & Exhibit

Each class is held for the full academic year with a break in-between sessions. Fall session begins Saturday, October 4, 2008 and runs through Saturday, December 13, 2008. There is a break and students return for the Winter/Spring session which begins January 24, 2009 and runs through April 18, 2009. All classes participate in a student exhibit which will be held Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Venice Arts Gallery located at 1702 Lincoln Blvd. in Venice. Please note: There will be no classes held Saturday, April 11, 2009.

How to Register

A registration appointment is required. Please call 310-578-1745 to schedule an appointment. For those who qualify for our free programs, we are required by our funders to document what community you live in and how much total income your family receives. This information is kept completely confidential and never leaves your child’s file at Venice Arts. When you call to make your appointment, we will tell you what documentation you will need to bring.

Registration Dates are as follows:
Saturday, September 20, 2008 for current and past Venice Arts students
Saturday, September 27, 2008 for new students

Registration is held at our offices at the Vera Davis Center located at 610 California Avenue, Venice, CA 90291.

FALL 2008 - SPRING 2009

Tuesday

• Digital Photography
4-6pm / Ages 13 & up / Level: Beginning & Intermediate / Location: Gallery
Students will learn to use digital SLR cameras and the computer to edit their images with Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. They will learn to create inkjet prints and post their work online while telling stories through photography.

• Intro to Filmmaking

4-6pm / Ages 10-12 / Location: Vera Davis Center
Learn the basics of moviemaking using digital video in this fun, project-based class.

Wednesday

• Intro to Comics

4-6pm / Ages 10-13 / Level: Beginning & Intermediate / Location: Vera Davis Center
Students will learn the basic elements of telling a story visually with comic illustration and writing using Adobe Photoshop.

• Advanced Studies: Digital Arts
4-6pm / Ages 13 & up / Level: Advanced / Pre-requisites: Approval of the Lead Artist / Location: Gallery
This class will focus on magazine design and conception using your artwork (photographs, illustrations, comics, paintings, and/or writing) while learning Adobe InDesign software.

• Advanced Studies: Film - Session 1
4 -6pm / Ages 13 & up / Level: Advanced / Pre-requisites: Approval of the Lead Artist / Location: Gallery
Students will expand their filmmaking skills to shoot and produce a fun documentary film about the story behind some of the Venice boardwalk performers.This class meets twice per week (see Saturday, Advanced Studies: Film - Session 2).

Thursday

• Beginning & Intermediate Fimmaking
4-6pm / Ages 12 & up / Level: Beginning & Intermediate / Location: Vera Davis Center
Beginning students will be introduced to filmmaking and intermediate students will move to the next level of video production, emphasizing the development of character and storytelling.

• Advanced Studies: Photography
4-6pm / Ages 13 & up / Level:Advanced / Pre-requisites: Permission of Lead Mentor / Location: Gallery
Students will develop their portfolios and create a photographic series to exhibit in the Spring working digitally, in black and white film, or both. Workshops will be taught in color correction, retouching, and working with RAW files.

Beginning students experiment with drawing, painting, collage, and more.

• Art Discovery 2

Beginning and returning students are introduced to new and exciting ways to create art through weekly projects and exercises.

• Digital Painting: Beyond the Brush
10-11:30am / Ages 10-13 / Level: Beginning and Intermediate / Location: Vera Davis Center
Beginning students explore the fundamentals of painting while continuing students learn more advanced skills in Adobe Photoshop to create digital paintings that tell a story.

• Digital Animation
11:30am-1pm / Ages 13 & up / Level: Beginning & Intermediate / Location: Vera Davis Center
Beginning students learn the fundamentals of 2D digital animation and learn to use Macromedia Flash software while continuing students expand upon their existing skills and knowledge to create Flash movies.

• Photography Projects
10am-12pm / Ages 10 - 12 / Level: Beginning & Intermediate / Location: Gallery
Students will learn how to tell stories through photography while learning the fundamentals or advancing their existing photographic skills. Students work on a group project or series of photographs.

• Intermediate Black & White Photography
1-3pm / Ages 13 & up / Level: Intermediate / Pre-requisites: 1 year of photography or Permission of Lead Mentor / Location: Gallery
Students must sign up for a required Darkroom Lab 4-6pm Wednesdays or Thursdays
Students will process film, create prints in the darkroom, learn to scan negatives, and expand their photographic skills. They will be given manual 35mm cameras to use for the duration of the class.

• Advanced Studies: Film - Session 2

Bienvenidos a Los Programas de Venice Arts

Si tienes entre 10 y 18 años, puedes tomar clases de fotografía, artes digitales, y cinematografía, usando nuestra tecnología de último modelo. Si tienes 6 a 9 años puedes participar en Descubrimiento del Arte, una clase que explora tu creatividad. Estas clases son completamente GRATIS para jovenes de escasos recursos.

Fechas Importantes y Exhibición

Todas las clases durarán por un año academico con un mes de descanzo en médio de la sesión. La primera sesión en Otoño empieza Sábado, el 4 de Octubre, 2008 y durará hasta Sábado, el 13 de Diciembre, 2008. Tendrán un descanzo y regresan para la segunda sesión de Invierno/Primavera que empieza el 24 de Enero, 2009 y termina el 18 de Abríl, 2009. Todas las clases culiminarán en una exhibición estudiantil que se actualizará, Sábado, el 25 de Abríl, 2009 en nuestra Galería localizada en1702 Lincoln Blvd. en Venice. Por favor apunte: Sábado, el 11 de Abríl, no tendremos clases.

Inscripciones son hechas solamente con cita. Por favor llame al 310-578-1745 para hacer su cita. Para los que califican, nuestros programas son completamente gratis. Nuestros colaboradores financieros requieren que nosotros documentemos en cuál comunidad vive y cuáles son los ingresos de la família. Esta información se mantiene completamente confidencial y nunca saldrá del archivo de sus hijos en Venice Arts. Cuando llame para hacer su cita, le diremos quales documentos tendrá que traer.

Otoño 2008 - Primavera 2009

Martes

• Fotografía Digital

4-6pm / Mayores de 13 años / Nivel: Principiante & Intermedio / Pre-requisitos: Ninguno / Ubicación: Galería
Estudiantes aprenderán a usar cámaras digitales tipo SLR y utilizarán la computadora para editar sus imágenes con programas como- Adobe Lightroom y Photoshop. Aprenderán a imprimir sus fotos en impresoras, subir sus obras al Internet, y contar cuentos fotográficos.

• Cinematografía Para Principiantes

4-6pm / Años 10-12 / Ubicación: Vera Davis Center
Aprenda elementos básicos de crear una pelicula usando video digital en esta divertida clase basada en proyectos.

Miércoles

• Tiras Comicas
4-6pm / Años 10-13 / Nivel: Principiante & Intermedio / Pre-requisites: None / Location: Vera Davis Center
Estudiantes aprenderán elementos básicos de contar cuentos visualmente con illustración cómica y escritura usando Adobe Photoshop.

• Proyectos Avanzados: Artes Digitales
4-6pm / Mayores de 13 años / Nivel: Avanzado /
Pre-requisitos: Permiso de Instructora Principal / Ubicación: Galería
Esta clase será enfocada en composición y diseño de revistas usando sus obras de arte (fotografía, dibújos, tiras cómicas, pinturas, y/o escritura) mientras que aprende a usar el programa Adobe InDesign.

• Proyectos Avanzados: Cinematografia, Sesión 1
4-6pm / Mayores de 13 años / Nivel: Intermedio & Avanzado / Pre-requisitos: Permiso de Instructor/Artista Principal / Ubicación: Galería
Clase obligatoria (Sesión 2) con esta clase- 1-3pm Sabado
Estudiantes escribirán, producirán y filmarán una pelicula corta de tres minutos en video digital. Adicionálmente, estudiantes explorarán medios de communicación a traves de presentaciónes y anáisis. Esta clase se junta dos veces por semana

• Cuarto Oscuro De Fotografía

(solo para estudiantes inscritos en la clase de Fotografía Intermedia en Blanco y Negro)

Jueves

• Cinematografía: Nivel Principiante e Intermedio
4-6pm / Mayores de 12 años / Nivel: Principiante e Intermedio / Pre-requisitos: Introducción al Video / Ubicación: Vera Davis Center
Estudiantes principiantes serán introducidos a cinematografía y estudiantes intermedios continuarán al proximo nivel de producción, énfasis será puesta en desarollo de narración y personaje.

• Proyectos Avanzados: Fotografía
4-6pm / Mayores de 13 años / Nivel: Avanzado / Pre-requisitos: Permiso del Instructor Principal / Ubicación: Galería
Estudiantes desarollarán sus catálogos y crearan una série fotográfica cual sera mostrada durante la exhibición de primavera. Utilizarán fotografía digitál, rollo blanco y negro u los dos. Talleres serán enseñadas en corrección de colores, retoque e imagenes en formato RAW.

• Cuarto Oscuro De Fotografía

(solo para estudiantes inscritos en la clase de Fotografía Intermedia en Blanco y Negro)

• Descubrimiento del Arte 1

Estudiantes principiantes experimentarán con el dibujo, la pintura, el collage y mucho más.

• Descubrimiento del Arte 2
10-11:30am / Años 8-9 / Nivel: Principiante & Intermedio / Ubicación: Vera Davis Center
Estudiantes empezando y continuando serán introducidos a nuevas y excitantes técnicas para crear arte a traves de proyectos y ejercicios creativos cada semana.

• Pintura Digitál: Más que la Brocha
10-11:30am / Años 10-13 / Nivel: Principiante & Intermedio / Pre-requisitos: Ninguno / Ubicación: Vera Davis Center
Estudiantes principantes explorarán los fundamentos de pintura mientras que los estudiantes continuando aprenden técnicas mas avanzadas en Adobe Photoshop para crear pinturas digitales que cuentan una historia.

• Animación Digital
11:30am-1pm / Mayores de 13 años / Nivel: Principiante & Intermedio / Ubicación: Vera Davis Center
Estudiantes principiantes aprenderán los fundamentos de animación digital en 2 dimensiones y también aprenderán a usar el programa Macromedia Flash mientras que los estudiantes continuando aumentan su conocimiento y habilidades

para animár y crear películas en Flash.

• Proyectos de Fotografía
10am-12pm / Años 10-12 / Nivel: Principiante & Intermedio
Pre-requisitos: Ninguno / Ubicación: Galería
Estudiantes aprenderán a contar cuentos fotográficos mientras aprenden elementos basicos y avanzan sus habiladades en fotografía. Juntos realizarán un proyecto para la exhibición de primavera.

• Fotografía Blanco & Negro Intermedio
1-3pm / Mayores de 13 años / Nivel: Intermedio / Pre-requisitos: 1 año de fotografía o permiso de la instructora principal / Ubicación: Galería
Taller de cuarto oscuro obligatorio con esta clase- 4-6pm Miercoles o Jueves
Estudiantes revelarán rollos, crearán índices de fotos en el cuarto oscuro, aprenderán a barrir negativas, y aumentarán sus habilidades en fotografía. Estudiantes usarán cámaras de 35mm durante toda la sesión.

• Proyectos Avanzados: Cinematografía, Sesión 2
1-3pm / mayores de 13 años / Nivel: Avanzado
